Buon Giorno

April 9, 2008
Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City

Not the one in Tagaytay City but it's another branch in Shaw Boulevard. I haven't been to the Tagaytay branch so I really don't know if this Buon Giorno is of the same ownership or just a franchise. Anyway, we were extremely hungry at around 5 or 6pm so we decided to eat out at Buon Giorno since we haven't tried it.

The prices were not that expensive and the menu looks really yummy! Ambiance is very homey and cozy for a restaurant in the bustling area of Shaw Boulevard. There's even a fountain in the front of the restaurant area.

We started with the appetizer/salad... We decided on the Seared Tuna Salad. The veggies looked really fresh and the presentation was splendid. The tuna on the other hand was not that fresh since I saw the cook take it from an aluminum foil and seared it using a flat sandwich griller, which explains the lack of sweetness of actual FRESH tuna. The dressing was a mustard dressing which I really liked and complemented the salad very well. The crust of the tuna was composed of crushed peppercorns and finely chopped cilantro, not a fan of cilantro though. Combined though, I give it 4/5 stars.

We ordered both the Sea Bass and the Rib-eye Steak for our entrés. Mine was the Rib-eye Steak. I asked for a medium rare steak regularly and people never seem to get that right... Again the steak was a bit overcooked. It was flattened using a tenderizer which made it appear bigger but I guess it didn't work 'cause it was NOT tender at all. Maybe the cooking was overcooked or maybe the steak was not a good cut. The dish was also a bit oily and the steak was really fatty. The chef or butcher probably failed or forgot to trim the meat. The taste was also a bit salty for me, I love the onion gravy though and it masked the steak's saltiness. Ironically, that shouldn't be the case since the gravy should not overpower the steak's flavor.

The Sea Bass entré was also on the oily side and it was a bit overcooked also. Flavor was alright and the taste was not fishy at all. For me, the Sea Bass was better than the steak since it had the better, unadulterated taste. I loved this dish except for the oiliness.

Overall, the meal was very filling. It was not AMAZING but a perfect temporary getaway from the very busy suburban life. Which, I think, is a must in this chaotic corporate world...
